Archaeologists working at Antalya’s iconic Hıdırlık Tower have uncovered a significant artifact—a mosaic bearing inscriptions and intricate designs—amid ongoing excavations. The discovery, announced by the Antalya Metropolitan Municipality, is part of the Hıdırlık Tower Surroundings Archaeological Excavation and Viewing Terrace Project, aimed at revitalizing the historic site.

Supervised by the Antalya Museum Directorate’s Conservation Implementation and Supervision Bureau (KUDEB), the excavations revealed a mosaic located southeast of the tower. The artwork, believed to date back to the Late Roman period, features two dolphin figures and a six-line inscription. Researchers are currently analyzing the text to decode its historical significance.

In addition to the mosaic, a columned structure was uncovered on the tower’s southern side. Experts speculate this could align with a street connected to Hadrian’s Gate, a renowned ancient landmark in the region. Conservation and excavation efforts in the area remain ongoing.

As part of the broader project, plans include constructing glass-paneled walkways to allow visitors to view the ruins and creating an observation deck overlooking the cliffs. Restoration work on the tower’s exterior walls and site landscaping are also underway, aiming to enhance both preservation and public access to Antalya’s rich heritage.
